Karen was a very young dynamic and very ambitious girl. She moved from Ireland to America for a better prospect and peaceful life.Karen was educated and hence it didn’t take much time for her to get settled in America. She had a good job where she not only had a satisfaction of what she is doing but also she was in a powerful position too.
Everyday Karen used to get up early morning and go to the gym. After her gym activity she would come home take a good shower and after a light healthy breakfast she would drive in her Audi to work.
Today also, nothing was different than other days. She woke up in the morning and guess what, she couldn’t see any thing except darkness.
She tried to switch on the table lamp that was near her bed and still it was dark. She couldn’t see a thing other than darkness. First she thought the electricity went off but then she quickly tried to pull the curtains aside of the nearest window in her bedroom. No change, she still see darkness.
All of a sudden she thought, ‘gosh did I woke up in the middle of the night?’
“What you loose in blindness is the space around you, the place where you are, and without that you might not exist. You could be nowhere at all” ~ Barbara Kingsolver
She cautiously by touching the walls slowly went into her office room. By touching with her hand she went to her desk and tried to log in to her mac. The log in sound made her feel that okay now at least she should be able to see it. But what she realized is that, it’s not the electricity or the late night, it’s her eye-sight.
Karen, started thinking like a detective agent. How to approach to her most trusted friend. She started thinking…even though I have logged in to my mac, but how do I make sure that which application was she logged into.
Her mind was running like an express. She knew exactly whom to send a mail and what to write but only if someone could tell her that she is logged into her email account and has clicked on the ‘Compose Mail’.
“If it is an extraordinary blindness to live without investigating what we are, it is a terrible one to live an evil life, while believing in God” ~ Blaise Pascal
She quickly ran to her phone that was kept on the charger. She couldn’t remember the number of her friend as she had fed it on her contact list and every time she had to call she would go by name. But now, she can’t even do that.
She thought of dialing 911. First she hesitated as how and what and if’s and buts!
She felt there is no other option than this. She immediately started dialing 911. The phone was picked up by an agent in the call center and she started narrating her story to the agent. The agent asked for her home address and assured her that with the necessary help cops will arrive at her door and they will try to see if you can open the door and if not then they will have to break the door.Karen agreed and kept the phone receiver down.
Karen sat there for a while only thinking how handicap time has made her. She started thinking of her grand mother who had lost her eyes and still she took care of the her kids and looked after most of the household work. Life could be so ridiculous at this stage she never ever even dreamed about it.All these thoughts were creeping into her mind when the door bell rang.
Can you imagine if something like this happens and if you are alone what would you do? I know you have to accept the situation and face it with a smile – figure out your next steps and life moves on…but just think for a moment where in today’s time where communication with the world is becoming easier day by day – how one has to follow the survival steps!
“If you don’t have faith in your people in the field, you are lost. If that faith is blind faith, then it is not faith at all, just maladministration” ~ Ray Cave
